An Experience Lead at Avenue A/Razorfish with over 7 years of experience in information architecture, Kevin Kearney awakens us to the possibilities of Web 2.0: blogs, wikis, tags, and other user-contributed web models. Kevin demonstrates how the widespread success of these tools in the public-social sphere can be tapped in corporate environments to increase knowledge sharing capabilities; thereby not only increasing productivity and streamlining workflow, but also creating a more interesting and lively work environment. Follow along with Kevin's presentation (pdf format © Kevin Kearney 2006 - Further reproduction prohibited)pdf as you listen to the mp3 file linked above.
Enjoy!

Dr. William Moen - "Metadata in the Networked Information Environment: Transformation, Reuse, Aggregation, and Interoperability"
Streaming Window's Media Video
April 13, 2006 (Thursday), 12:30-1:30 p.m.
Drexel University iSchool, Rush Building, Room 014

Dr. Moen is Interim Director of the Texas Center for Digital Knowledge and Associate Professor at the School of Library and Information Sciences, University of North Texas.

In their attempts to organize information for effective access, librarians have focused on the creation of representations for the information resources in their collections. Until the mid-1990s, we called these representations “bibliographic records” or “catalog records”. That terminology has given way to the general concept of metadata; it is a term than has many definitions, but basically refers to structured representations of information resources. In addition, librarians now find that our familiar metadata records – in the form of MARC bibliographic records – are not the only form of metadata of interest to us and our users.

The networked information environment is presenting librarians with exciting challenges and opportunities to apply the principles of information organization and management. In this environment, wide-ranging applications such as digital libraries and institutional repositories, and a multitude of curated collections utilize various schemes of metadata. Metadata has become a key concept in discussions organization and management of digital resources.
