For some, a career in librarianship happens by accident. Jack Morris, once in construction sales and sports writing, wound up in librarianship because he likes research. Morris, a graduate of Dickenson College with a B.A. in History and Drexel University with an M.S. in Library and Information Science, originally thought he would go to law school. He is now a Corporate Librarian and manages the Information Center at Weston Solutions, Inc., an environment and redevelopment firm committed to restoring resource efficiencies for their clients worldwide.
Managing the Information Center at Weston Solutions involves serving the information needs of the entire company. On any given day, Morris will provide his professional expertise in obtaining information on topics related to general business, marketing, and technology to supporting scientists with their research and keeping the company informed of the Environmental Protection Agency (federal), state, and local regulations. The challenges he faces are those familiar to most librarians today: keeping ahead of technology, always looking to make information available and readily accessible, and wanting to add value in servicing his clients' information needs. With these challenges in mind, Morris shares his thoughts on how he feels librarianship will change in the future, "Librarians will be more involved with providing the tools for clients to do their own research rather than being the gatekeepers of information. Librarians will, more than likely, evolve into jobs that work with databases and systems."
In closing, Morris offers this advice to current MS (LIS) Graduate students, "Don't panic about the job market. With the graying of the profession, there is a very real need for librarians." He also suggests joining SLA. "It will put you in contact with other librarians and give you exposure to job opportunities and different library jobs. Besides, SLA is fun!"
Meet Jack Morris at the upcoming "Rush at Rush" (January 14, 2003) and at the first SLA Drexel Student Chapter meeting (January 21, 2003).
