Hyoil Han joined College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University in 2002.   Hyoil received her BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Korea University in her hometown, her MS degree in Electrical Engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and her Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2002.   Previously she worked for Samsung Electronics and Telecommunication Network Lab. at Korea Telecom as a member of technical staff.

Reasearch Interest
Intelligent Information Processing, Mining, and Management:
Text/data mining, Data management/integration, Automated knowledge acquisition, Information extraction/retrieval (IE/IR), Natural language understanding, The Semantic Web, Semantic web service, Service oriented computing, XML data management, Stream data mining/management, Digital library, Life sciences (medical informatics and bioinformatics), and Scientific computing.

Information management and knowledge discovery from e-sources (electronic data sources) are becoming increasingly difficult due to the existence of massive amounts of heterogeneous data that only humans are able to understand. Until recently, research has focused on syntactically understandable machine information exchange and discovery. Semantics is the key for information technologies that focus on automating semantically meaningful information interchange, understanding data/text, and discovering knowledge from the Web and other e-sources. Applying database and artificial intelligence techniques (such as machine learning and natural language understanding) to data/text in e-sources is one of the best approaches for achieving the goals of understanding data/text, discovering semantic knowledge from e-sources, integrating/interchanging data seamlessly, and transforming its nature from one that only humans can understand to one that a machine can process. The data available in e-sources is of various kinds, such as semi-structured, unstructured and even stream data. Traditional theories and technologies cannot process these data types. New approaches are required to understand, mine, and manage them. My research focuses on developing theories and building intelligent systems for understanding, mining, and managing these unconventional data types.
